Barn Dance Home

Pass the Buck is a funky barn dance band.  Playing venues across Dorset and Hampshire including Bournemouth, Poole and Southampton,  we occasionally go further afield.

For 2020 we are offering a new format which may suit gatherings of families, friends or work colleagues that would like a few dances called in the evening, together with “talk time” and freestyle dancing. Let’s call it Jaylee! We will have a guest singer, our melodian player John will call 3 or 4 dances, and there will be some songs from the 1950s to bop to.

If you have a group of keen barn dancers, then of course we can arrange a caller (instead of the singer) for a traditional evening of barn dancing, or ceilidh. The caller will explain each dance in advance as you would expect.

So you can choose from the two event styles, depending on how much barn dancing is needed.

Folk Rock Music For Your Barn Dance

The members of the band have been performing together for many years. This experience will make all the difference on your big night.. What do we mean by “funky”?  We do play some traditional folk dance tunes, however we also write our own material with catchy melodies and interesting harmony/rhythmic content designed to inspire the dancers.

The strong rhythm section, drum kit and electric bass underlines our rock folk style. Easy on the ears for the modern audience. Listen to our demo tracks on the sound bites page..

Review “You said you weren’t ‘diddly-diddly’.  How right you were. The first couple of turns certainly seemed traditional enough as you guided us through our paces. Then this bass line just ripped out of nowhere!”.

Your Event

Holding a barn dance for a special occasion has greatly increased in popularity in recent years.

It is an excellent way to get people to mingle.  Many couples are choosing to celebrate their wedding with a barn dance.

It is also an ideal way to bring people together for a birthday party or anniversary, fund raising or any social event. Our caller will walk you through each dance before the music starts and call the moves throughout.

If you are thinking of organising a social event for friend and family, or work colleagues we will be pleased to give you friendly advice to help your evening run smoothly.

The Dance

The Dance

Our regular caller Jennet Lambert has over 20 years experience coaching dance groups and calling for barn dances.

Jennet brings all her creativity to your event to ensure that even those trying folk dance for the first time find lots of enjoyment from the experience.

As well as calling a number of traditional barn dances, Jennet has composed quite a few of her own, some of which have been called by other barn dance callers – no finer accolade.

If there is a particular dance that you would like for your occasion, just ask us – we may even write one just for you.

Pass the Buck has played across the South of England including Festivals at Swanage, Wimborne, Winchester and Christchurch. We are always delighted to be invited to play.

The Music

Pass the Buck has developed a strong mix of traditional folk tunes with driving bass and drum rhythms.

Our music is always interesting, for listening to, as well as for dancing.  We have even been known to burst into song on occasion, sometimes at the request of the audience!

In addition to playing the more traditional barn dance-type melodies, members of the band have written a number of  cracking tunes, some of which you can hear on our CD recording ‘Buck Naked’ (Samples on the Sound Bites page).

For a more music based evening with “talk time”, we can bring a singer (instead of a caller), and John will call just 2 or 3 barn dances during the evening, and there is the chance to add some bopping freestyle with some dance tunes from the 1950s.
